BPC-157: The Body’s Own Repair Peptide
What Is BPC-157?
BPC-157 (sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide modeled on a protective compound found naturally in human gastric juice. It has been studied for decades by researchers at the University of Zagreb led by Dr. Predrag Sikiric, originally as a candidate treatment for inflammatory bowel disease, before its broader healing effects drew attention in sports-recovery circles.
How It’s Proposed to Work
Laboratory studies describe BPC-157 as interacting with the nitric oxide system to support new blood vessel formation, protect the gut lining, and help organize tissue at injury sites, including effects on genes involved in early collagen formation. These mechanisms are best documented in the gastrointestinal tract; musculoskeletal applications are extrapolated from a smaller, more recent body of animal work.
What the Research Shows
BPC-157’s strongest evidence base comes from the gut. Developed clinically as PL 14736, it reportedly reached a Phase II human trial for ulcerative colitis; a 2012 review describes that trial and reports no dose-limiting toxicity in the researchers’ own testing. That trial data is more than a decade old and we have not located a published completion report or FDA action following it, so we treat it as historical context rather than proof of a marketed drug.

Regulatory & Safety Status You Should Know
BPC-157’s bulk-substance nomination was previously placed in the FDA’s Category 2 list for compounding, the category reserved for substances the agency views as raising significant safety risks. As of the FDA’s most recent update, content current as of April 22, 2026, that nomination has been withdrawn by the nominator, which removes it from the active Category 2 table, though this is not the same as FDA approval for human use.

The picture moved on this front. At its July 23–24, 2026 meeting, the FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) voted 8–6 (with one abstention) to recommend that BPC-157 be added to the Section 503A bulk drug substances list for pharmacy compounding. Importantly, this is a non-binding recommendation, not FDA approval: the FDA has not finalized a decision and BPC-157 remains unapproved for human use as of this update.
